CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
DC – double crochet
SP – space
SK – skip stitch
REP – repeat
with color #1
Chain 6, slip stitch into the first ch to form a closed ring.
OR
Start with a magic ring
R1: 16sc in ring. Sl st to join.
R2: Ch 4 (counts as first dc and ch 1), *1 dc in next st, ch 1. Repeat around, join with a sl st, fasten off.

R3: Join color #2 in any ch 1 sp. Ch 3, 1 dc in same sp, ch 1, *2dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1. Repeat around from * until you get to the end, join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3.
R4: Sl st into the next st and then in the ch 1 space (2 sl sts). Ch 3, 2 dc in same ch 1 sp, ch 1, *3dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1. Repeat from * around, sl st at the top of the beginning ch 3.
R5: Sl st in next 2 sts, sl st into ch 1 sp. Ch3, 2dc, ch 2, 3dc (makes 1st corner). *Ch 1 and 2sc in next 2 ch 1 sp, (3dc, ch 2, 3dc) in next ch 1 sp (2nd corner). Repeat from * twice more. (Ch 1, 2sc, ch 1) in next 2 ch 1 sps. Join with a sl st.
Use this optional border if your squares are smaller than the previous squares you’ve crocheted.
R6:Sc around, join w sl st, fasten off.
